Liechtenstein U21s enjoy some Malaga magic

The Costa del Sol provides an outstanding climate in which to enjoy a winter training camp and much as Marbella and the immediate area boasts many outstanding facilities, at ESEM, we pride ourselves on our knowledge of the options that exist across the whole region.

When approached by the Liechtenstein FA to handle a week-long February training camp ahead of the U21 squad’s next European Championships qualifying fixture against Turkey in March, it was stressed to us that we needed to achieve outstanding value for money and to give the players the best preparation their more conservative budgets could allow.  Marielle Liedenbaum, takes up the story:  “Without hesitation, we recommended the Hotel Antequera Golf in Santa Catalina near Malaga.

“The venue is situated some way inland and quite a distance away from the areas usually used by more high profile clubs and Football Associations.  However, it still has superb facilities including a good quality pitch next to the main hotel, while also benefiting from some fantastic mountain scenery which makes being there a real pleasure.”

In addition to observing the usual training programme and making use of the various on-site relaxation facilities such as a beautiful pool and stunning golf course, the players were also given the chance to spend time shopping and to have a look around Malaga town centre; which as many of the squad commented, is a much-underrated city.

Marielle continues:  “The players and staff had a great week and towards the end of the camp, with the team needing to have some more competitive action, we arranged a friendly game with Atlético Malagueño, Malaga’s second team, which was played at nearby Torremolinos.

“The match was watched by a number of local spectators and much as it resulted in a defeat, it gave the players a valuable work-out before their next competitive fixture.”
